If we occur to couple to a 404 page from your site, will Google lower that page given it delivers a viewed sub-optimal user experience? Or would joining to a page that ends adult apropos a 404 only be seen as a standard thing on a web as distant as Google is concerned?
I asked Gary Illyes from Google, after some SEOs were saying that joining to a 404 would means that page’s ranks to be demoted. And a answer is unquestionably no.
@jenstar What? No. Why on earth would that be a good idea?

Pages can go to a 404 for a series of reasons… maybe a site was redesigned and pages weren’t all rightly redirected; maybe a site was temporarily taken and was regulating a 404 server code; or maybe a site is henceforth offline or has switched to a domain parking page. And many webmasters don’t guard their effusive links on a unchanging basement to locate them all. And penalizing a site for something another website has finished would be a terrible idea.
Now, from a user knowledge perspective, joining to a 404 page isn’t a best knowledge for those users, and it creates clarity to intermittently yield your site and check links for 404s or other errors. But for any incomparable site, joining to pages that turn 404s in a destiny will always occur and is only what happens in an elaborating web.
